What to do when someone dies
Losing someone you love is one of life’s hardest moments. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or unsure of what to do next. At Dearman Bartlett Independent Funeral Directors, we are here to gently guide you through each step giving you the time and space to grieve while we take care of the practicalities.
Step 1: When the Death Happens
At home: If the death was expected, call the GP (or NHS 111 if it is out of hours). A doctor or nurse will attend to confirm the death.
In a hospital, hospice, or care home: The staff will let you know when the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) is ready.
If the death was sudden or unexpected: Emergency services may attend, and the death might be referred to the Coroner. This is standard procedure and does not always mean there is anything suspicious.
Step 2: The Medical Examiner
Most deaths in England are now reviewed by a Medical Examiner, an independent senior doctor who
confirms that the cause of death is correct before it is sent to the registrar. This process
usually takes a day or two and helps ensure everything is accurate and in order.
Step 3: Registering the Death
You must register the death within 5 days (or 7 in some cases).
You can:
- Book an appointment online with Kent County Council
- Or ask us to guide you through the process
At your appointment, you will receive:
- The Green Form (needed for the funeral to go ahead)
- Copies of the death certificate (available to purchase for legal purposes such as wills, banks, and pensions)
Step 4: Contacting Us
Once the doctor has confirmed the death, you can call us on 01797 290083, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We will bring your loved one into our care and look after them with utmost respect until the day of the funeral.
Step 5: Arranging the Funeral
We will arrange a time to sit with you, either at our funeral home or in the comfort of your own home, to discuss the type of farewell you would like. We will guide you through the choices available and take care of all the details so you don’t have to.
Step 6: Support after the Funeral
Our care does not end on the day of the funeral. We can support you with:
- Collecting ashes and advice on what to do next
- Memorials and keepsakes
- Local bereavement support
